Shooting Suspect Arrested
A man suspected of shooting two men was arrested Sunday after allegedly kidnapping a woman and her baby boy, then attacking an officer by scratching at his eyes and grabbing for his gun, said police spokesman Dick Cottam.
Sergio J. Turner, 21, was booked on the shootings warrant plus additional charges of possessing a stolen weapon, assaulting an officer and two counts each of assault and kidnapping.
The shootings occurred Dec. 18 after an argument at the Silver Lanes bowling alley at Lincoln Heights. An 18-year-old was shot in the arm, and a 22-year-old caught a bullet fragment in the cheek.
According to police reports, an officer pulled over a car around 3 a.m. Sunday at Francis and Nevada. The woman who was driving stopped, but a man in the passenger seat began choking her. The officer pulled her free - only to be attacked by the passenger, Cottam said. They struggled outside the car until backup officers arrived.
Police searched the car and found two loaded handguns concealed beneath the passenger seat, Cottam said.
Turner was taken to a hospital for drug testing. Officers said “he appeared to be under the influence of a mind-altering substance,” Cottam said.
The woman and child were released. Police said Turner knew the woman casually and had forced her into the car.
