Willamette Buries Eighth-Ranked Whits

Unranked Willamette connected on 13 of 17 shots from 3-point range and coasted to a 96-66 win over Whitworth in a Northwest Conference men’s basketball game Friday night in Salem, Ore.

The loss dropped the Pirates, ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Division II poll, to 13-4, 6-3. The Bearcats, 94-58 losers to the Pirates earlier this season, improved to 6-10, 4-5.

“They just didn’t miss,” said Pirates coach Warren Friedrichs, commenting on Willamette’s 3-point shooting.

Willamette jumped ahead 10-2 and 22-7 and increased the margin to 52-33 at the half.

Bearcats senior guard Mike Hayter led all scorers with 28 points, including 6 of 6 from 3-point range. Guard Sean Weston led the Pirates with 13 points.

Melisa McDaniel hit two free throws with 9 seconds remaining as the Vandals overcame poor shooting to pick up a Big West Conference win over Cal State Fullerton (6-11, 1-5) at Fullerton, Calif.

The win was Idaho’s fourth straight and moves it into sole possession of first place in the Eastern Division with a 4-2 record, 9-9 overall.

Whitworth went on a 22-7 run in the final 10:16 of the first half to take a 13-point halftime lead and held on to beat Willamette (10-6, 7-2) in a Northwest Conference game at Salem, Ore.

The win improved Whitworth to 8-9, 4-5.

Silvernail leads pro volleyball team

Sarah Silvernail led Utah with 16 kills and 13 blocks as the Predators opened their Pro Volleyball League season with a 15-5, 15-9, 15-12 win over the Sacramento Stars at Salt Lake City. The win was Salt Lake’s 10th straight at home. Silvernail finished her collegiate career at Washington State in December.
