Bruins Bolt Corvallis In First Place

Associated Press

Pac-10

Charles O’Bannon scored 19 points Saturday while Oregon State turned cold in the game’s final 7 minutes, allowing UCLA to escape with a 74-68 Pac-10 victory over the last-place Beavers.

The victory gave the Bruins (12-6, 7-2 Pac-10) a split in their Willamette Valley trip and left them alone in first in the conference standings, a half-game ahead of Arizona.

But the Bruins had no easy time against the young Beavers (5-13, 1-8), whose freshman star Corey Benjamin fouled out with 11:23 to play.

Sasha Petrovic’s score on a drive to the basket cut UCLA’s lead to 63-62 with 7:08 to play. The Bruins’ Toby Bailey scored three points and had two assists during a 9-2 run capped by Jelani McCoy’s second consecutive stuff shot that put UCLA ahead 72-64 with 1:53 to play.

The Beavers came back. Terrill Woods scored on a rebound and Carson Cunningham, who had 20 points, drove through the much bigger Bruins for a layup to cut the lead to 72-68.

Cameron Dollar and O’Bannon both missed the first of one-and-one free-throw opportunities, but the Beavers missed repeated 3-point attempts and Kris Johnson finally clinched the victory by making two free throws 14.3 seconds from the finish.
