Idaho Justices Delay Action On Term Limits Initiative Challenge
The Idaho Supreme Court has delayed considering a constitutional challenge to the federal term limits measure approved by voters in November until the U.S. Supreme Court decides whether to hear a similar case from Arkansas.
The delay in the briefing and hearing schedule, announced Thursday, was requested by Secretary of State Pete Cenarrusa and Citizens for Federal Term Limits, the group behind the initiative endorsed by 56 percent of Idaho voters.
A court challenge was filed last month by a bipartisan coalition of legislators led by House Speaker Michael Simpson and Senate President Pro Tem Jerry Twiggs, both Blackfoot Republicans.
It seeks to bar the secretary of state from carrying out the requirement that ballots identify candidates as having “Disregarded Voters’ Instructions On Term Limits” if they have not done everything possible to limit congressional terms.
