Olympic champion Oksana Baiul says she had four or five mixed drinks before driving her Mercedes off a Connecticut road at nearly 100 mph last month, but contends she wasn’t drunk.

“I’m a Russian,” Baiul said when talk-show host Oprah Winfrey insisted the 19-year-old skater must have been affected by such consumption.

Montana State linebacker Cedric Cooper pleaded guilty to refusing a police order to leave a bar parking lot during a shouting match with officers Tuesday. Cooper, 20, was fined $100 and given a one-year deferred sentence. He must also perform 8 hours of community service.

Gamblers worried about being beaten up because they owed money to bookmakers touched off an investigation that closed down two sports-gambling rings near the University of Florida, according to police.

One of the rings operated in a restaurant and the other was conducted out of a student’s home, investigators said.
