Cheney Slips Past Pullman For Second At Swim Regional

Cheney edged Pullman by .36 seconds in the final event, the 400-meter freestyle relay, to take second place in the AA half of the District 5-6-7 regional swimming meet Saturday at Eastern Washington University.

Eastmont swam away with the AA team title by compiling 379 points. The runner-up Blackhawks edged the Greyhounds 231-230.

The AAA winner was Moses Lake (310), followed by Wenatchee (285) and Davis (325).

Cheney’s Gavin Peterson qualified for the Feb. 21-22 state meet in Federal Way with a first-place finish (2:05.55) in the 200 individual medley.

Cheney’s 400 freestyle relay team will also make the trip.

Pullman’s Tim O’Connor and Mark Hammond each qualified for state in two individual events.

O’Connor made it with second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Hammond qualified with second-place finishes in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.

The Greyhounds 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams are also headed to state.

Cheney’s Mike Guertin was named coach of the year.

Eastmont’s Zane Dewitz, who was named swimmer of the year, qualified for his third event by winning the 100 butterfly. Dewitz broke his own district record with a time of 51.71. His previous mark of 52.34 was set last year.
