UCLA 87, (18) Stanford 68

Charles O’Bannon scored 23 points and the Bruins avenged a 48-point loss to Stanford last month with a victory over the Cardinal in Los Angeles.

The Bruins (13-7) share first place in the Pacific-10 Conference at 8-3 with crosstown rival Southern California. Stanford continues to slide out of contention, with its fourth straight conference road loss and fourth defeat in six games.

A month ago, Stanford dealt the Bruins their worst loss ever, 109-61. Stanford point guard Brevin Knight had 20 of his 25 points in the first half when UCLA trailed by 31.

This time, Knight couldn’t help his team overcome a 36-29 halftime deficit. He was 2 of 7 from the field in the opening 20 minutes and he finished with 14 points.

The Bruins broke it open with a 14-4 spurt, including four points each by Toby Bailey, J.R. Henderson and Jelani McCoy, to take a 50-33 lead with 13:48 remaining.

The Cardinal never cut their deficit to single digits after the opening few minutes of the second half, shooting 39 percent for the game and making just 7 of 22 3-pointers.
