Cda May Ok Seawall Growth

Seawalls protecting residential homes along Sanders Beach soon may start growing toward the waterline.

Under orders from the City Council, the Coeur d’Alene Planning Commission will consider revising the rules this evening. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

The proposed changes grew out of a council decision Jan. 7. Homeowner Jack Simpson wanted to build a seawall on his property, but that was rejected based on current shoreline ordinances.

The council, however, also instructed the Planning Commission to modify the rules to allow Simpson to build a wall that would match his neighbor’s wall. That wall, however, extends to within 18 feet of the summer waterline.

If the ordinance is modified it means that other homeowners along Sanders Beach also will be able to extend their seawalls farther toward the lake, said Jean DeBarbieris, of the city planning department.

If the Planning Commission approves the change, it will go to the council for the first time on Feb. 18. The council will have to set a public hearing on the issue.

The soonest that hearing could occur is March 18.
