Mariners Have Fun In Camp Baseball
In the Seattle Mariners training camp at Peoria, Ariz., Chris Bosio, warned acting manager Lee Elia that he would work out only on the field closest to the clubhouse (for quick getaways) and talked about playing golf with friends Mark O’Meara and Tiger Woods.
“When Junior comes in, everybody sits back and smiles,” catcher Dan Wilson said.
Ken Griffey won’t work out until Thursday, but he could not resist showing up to spread a little Junior Joy. When reserve catcher John Marzano held up a new contract offer and said “Thanks, Junior, I owe this to you,” Griffey snatched the document.
“I told them to sign you for $2,” he said, pretending to read it. “Good - they did.”
Johnson update
Randy Johnson felt no ill-effects the day after his first hard throwing in the bullpen. Today, he will throw again - increasing his pitch count from 25 to 35.
“I think we were all encouraged,” trainer Rick Griffin said. “His last pitch (Saturday) he really let go. We’re going to limit his running and bending over for fielding drills, but he’s doing fine.”
Sele loses arbitration case
Clubs remained unbeaten in arbitration this year when Boston pitcher Aaron Sele lost his case Sunday but still got a raise of nearly 200 percent.
Arbitrator Anthony Sinicropi sided with the Red Sox offer of $1,126,000 rather than the former Washington State University star’s request for $1.4 million. Sele earned $380,000 last season.
