St. George’s, Selkirk On To District

Girls basketball

St. George’s and Selkirk survived losers’-bracket battles Monday in the Panorama League girls basketball tournament to earn spots in the district tournament.

Miranda Routh-Corker scored 28 points to lead St. George’s past Republic 54-35 in Spokane and Selkirk whipped visiting Columbia 56-27.

The losers were eliminated.

St. George’s (14-9) and Selkirk (19-4) meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Colville for third and fourth seeding to the Northeast District B Tournament, which opens Monday at Spokane Falls Community College.

Routh-Corker, who scored 21 of her points in the first half, also had 11 rebounds, six steals and three blocked shots. Wenchi Liu had 11 assists and six steals for the Dragons. Melissa Friend led Republic with 11 points.

Balanced scoring was the key for the Rangers.

Rachel Sharp led the way with eight points, six in the second quarter to help Selkirk open a 12-point halftime lead. Molly Carlson had 15 rebounds and Tara Porter five assists for Selkirk.

Jamie Schrack and Mindy Etue had six points each for the Lions. Columbia managed just six field goals, but four were 3-pointers.

Tekoa-Oakesdale hit four free throws in the final minute to hold off St. John-Endicott 44-39 and earn the league’s No. 1 seed to the Southeast District B Tournament next week.

In the battle for third and fourth seeding, LaCrosse-Washtucna dispatched Garfield-Palouse 56-40.

With 2 minutes to go and the Nighthawks (19-3) up 40-36, Brooke Bafus nailed a 3-pointer for the Eagles (18-4).

But that was to be SJE’s final points as Miranda Brown hit three free throws and Heather Cox one for the Nighthawks.

Cox led a balanced T-O offense with 10 points. Tricia Lamb of SJE took game scoring honors with 18.

Christine Cronrath scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the first quarter to get the Tigercats (11-10) started against the Vikings (9-13).

Cronrath had three 3-pointers and hit all six of her free throws for L-W. As a team, the Tigercats were 14 of 19 from the line to the Vikings’ 9 of 16. Katie Coles led Gar-Pal with 14 points.
