Wells’ Woes Mount

Compiled From Wire Services

David Wells, already slowed by a broken left hand, has found out he also has gout.

The hefty lefty thought he had turf toe, but tests performed detected gout, a condition caused by excess uric acid in the blood. Gout can cause joint inflammation, and the condition sidelined Wells for two weeks last season.

Infielder Scott Brosius and the Oakland Athletics avoided a salary arbitration hearing when they agreed to a $2.55 million, one-year contract.

Brosius, 30, hit .304 last season with 22 homers and 71 RBIs, and made $970,000.
