Dog That Bit Jogger Has 16 Teeth Pulled
A 70-pound dog declared “dangerous” by the city is back at its South Hill home after having 16 teeth pulled.
The mixed-breed dog had been impounded at the city animal shelter since attacking a Lincoln Park jogger on Jan. 19.
Stephanie Schrimshire, 59, a teacher at North Central High School, spent a week in the hospital after the dog shredded her ankle.
The dog’s owner, Monica Hulubei, is appealing the hearing examiner’s ruling on grounds that Axel can no longer bite.
“The dog has been rendered completely harmless,” Hulubei said, adding that Axel has also been neutered.
Hulubei’s appeal is set for a May hearing. In the meantime, she posted required “dangerous dog” signs around her home, purchased a special $150 license and obtained $50,000 in liability insurance.
The dog is allowed outside only if it is muzzled and on an eight-foot leash, said Gail Mackie, director of SpokAnimal CARE.
Mackie still considers the dog dangerous.
“It can still bite with its back teeth,” she said.
