Devils Land Gilmour In Swap With Toronto

Associated Press

Around the NHL

The New Jersey Devils finally got a marquee center for another Stanley Cup push, acquiring Doug Gilmour from Toronto on Tuesday in a five-player trade that continues the rebuilding of the woeful Maple Leafs.

Gilmour, 33, gives the NHL’s third-worst offense possibly its most talented center ever. New Jersey also picked up defenseman Dave Ellett and reacquired a conditional draft pick it sent to Toronto last year in a trade for Dave Andreychuk. Gilmour had 15 goals and 45 assists for the Leafs this season.

The Maple Leafs, tied for the fewest points in the league, got two young players in forward Steve Sullivan and defenseman Jason Smith. They also got the rights to forward Alyn McCauley, who is playing junior hockey for Ottawa.

“I knew there had to be a time when the (Maple Leafs) organization had to start rebuilding,” said Andreychuk, who played on the same line with Gilmour at Toronto.

Two players suspended

Vancouver Canucks forward Donald Brashear has been suspended for four games and Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Michel Petit for two, the NHL said Tuesday.

Brashear was suspended for a blind-sided sucker punch to the head of Los Angeles Kings center Ian Laperriere, and Petit was banished for kneeing Florida Panthers forward Johan Garpenlov. Both incidents occurred Saturday night.

Both Brashear and Petit were suspended without pay, and both also were fined $1,000.

On the ice

Kelly Hrudey stopped 31 shots and San Jose held off a Florida power play over the final 3:02 of OT, giving the Sharks a 2-2 tie at Miami.

Todd Harvey took advantage of a Chicago blunder to score unassisted as the Dallas Stars tied a franchise record for road victories (19) by beating the Blackhawks 1-0.
