Injuries Complicate Davis Cup Selections

Compiled From Wire Services

Jim Courier is now set to play but Tood Martin is out after undergoing elbow surgery Tuesday, and injured Andre Agassi is a questionable entry for the U.S. team that will face the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarterfinals in April.

U.S. captain Tom Gullikson said at a news conference Tuesday that Pete Sampras has committed to play in the semifinals and finals if the United States gets that far.

Sampras cannot play in the April 4-6 matches at Palisades Tennis Club in Newport Beach, Calif., because of a scheduling conflict. Michael Chang also is unavailable because of other commitments.

Rick Leach and Jonathan Stark, the world’s No. 2 doubles team, likely will fill out the four-man roster.

Gullikson is not required to announce his team until 10 days before the first matches, but he plans to do so well before then.

Agassi is doubtful because of a sprained ankle. Another strong candidate, MaliVai Washington, injured his knee playing singles with Courier in the 4-1 victory over Brazil in the previous round and has been slow recovering.
