Levi Strauss Reports Record Sales For 1996
Levi Strauss & Co., which this month announced plans to cut a fifth of its salaried employees, reported Wednesday that sales in 1996 climbed 6 percent to a record $7.1 billion.
The world’s largest maker of brand-name clothing said sales in the United States rose 7 percent to $4.3 billion, largely due to strong demand for its Levi’s and Dockers lines.
In addition, its Slates line, a new brand of dress pants for men, grew at a faster rate than expected.
The San Francisco-based company said overseas sales rose 6 percent to $2.8 billion. Higher European sales were offset by lower sales in the Asia-Pacific region.
Privately held Levi Strauss does not report its earnings.
