Badgers Upset Indiana

Wisconsin coach Dick Bennett tried his best to downplay the historical significance of the Badgers’ 71-58 victory over No. 12 Indiana at Madison, Wis., on Saturday.

He never mentioned the Badgers’ 31-game losing streak against the Hoosiers, or that Wisconsin’s last victory over Indiana was in 1980.

“I know that much will be made of getting that monkey off our back,” Bennett said. “But I didn’t feel the pressure of that because I wasn’t here and wasn’t a big part of that … nor were these kids. We didn’t talk about it, quite frankly.”

Bennett didn’t have to say anything because the players already knew.

“We really wanted to win this one for Coach Bennett,” junior point guard Ty Calderwood said. “This was a monumental win for him.”

“This is one of the milestones for the program,” added junior Sean Daugherty.

Wisconsin (8-3, 1-1 Big Ten) scored the game’s first 17 points. Indiana (14-2, 1-1) committed 26 turnovers.

Daugherty, Sam Okey and Paul Grant each scored 13 points to lead Wisconsin. Calderwood added 11 points, but more importantly, he handled the ball flawlessly as the Badgers committed a season-low five turnovers. Wisconsin did not turn the ball over at all in the second half.

“We took good care of the ball and much of that is attributed to the play of Ty,” Bennett said. “He had the ball in his hands and made sure we got a shot each time and we managed the shot clock. He played a quality game.”
