Kids Safety Program, Contest Being Sponsored By Kiwanis

Spokane Kiwanis clubs are sponsoring a bike helmet safety program and contest for first through eighth graders.

For $10, students receive a white helmet and are invited to decorate it with markers. Judges will select the best decorating job in each age group. Eight bikes will be awarded as first prizes, along with “hundreds” of other prizes, said Dan St. John, Kiwanis club member.

Helmet decorating sessions are planned at Franklin Park Mall on Saturday, Jan. 25 and Feb. 8, and Sunday, Feb. 23. There will be two sessions each day, 10 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m.

“The idea is to get kids to wear their helmets, maybe if they decorate it themselves they will have some ownership in it,” said St. John.

In keeping with the safety theme, Bumpers Fun Center at NorthTown Mall will sponsor safety classes on four Sundays: Jan. 19, Jan. 26, Feb. 2 and Feb. 9. The one-hour classes start at 1 p.m. The sessions are sponsored by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department and the Spokane Chapter of the Brain Injury Association.

Animal clinic accredited

Garland Animal Clinic recently passed the American Animal Hospital Associations accreditation program at the four-year level, the highest possible level of membership.

Accreditation is awarded after detailed evaluation of the facility, equipment, and pet care. Less than 17 percent of the small animal veterinary clinics in the United States are members of the association.

“There are very stringent regulations for cleanliness and record keeping and animal care, we try to meet those standards so we can have as excellent a practice as we can,” said Michael Leinweber, DVM, a partner in the practice with A. Roger Harder, DVM.

Other accredited veterinary clinics in north Spokane include the Spokane Animal Clinic and the Five Mile Veterinary Clinic.

Garland Animal Clinic, 623 W. Garland, has been in the neighborhood for 28 years.
