Good Shepherd Lutheran Program Nurtures Youths

Nina Culver Correspondent

CORRECTION: 1-16-97; V11 Matt Daniel is the youth director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. His name was incorrect in Saturday’s Valley Voice.

A new program for youth is starting its second year at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in the Valley. Logos is a program that focuses on nurturing youth and helping them grow, says church youth director Pat Daniel. The group for young people in grades 7 through 12 meets each Wednesday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The students spend the time playing games or doing crafts, eating dinner together, working on their worship skills, and studying the Bible. Parents are encouraged to participate and asked to volunteer whatever time they can.

All 18 youths who participated in the program in its first year are expected to return, along with some new faces, says Daniel. “The kids who go through it really like it.”

A registration session will be held Sunday after the 11 a.m. worship service at Good Shepherd, 810 S. Sullivan Road. The $50 registration fee covers the cost of the meals and other materials.

The first meeting will be on Wednesday. Child care will be available for children not yet old enough to participate in the group.

‘Gospel Opry’ every Thursday

A unique program at the Valley Assembly of God church every week is about to celebrate its first anniversary.

“Gospel Opry” is a sing-along featuring old-fashioned Gospel music. The event was started nearly a year ago by bar musician-turnedevangelist Lou McCoy. McCoy just wanted to share the music that touched him, says his sister-in-law, Bobbie McCoy.

The group is not affiliated with any particular church and just performs weekly at Valley Assembly, 15618 E. Broadway, and wherever they are invited.

The free event is hugely popular, typically drawing 100 people or more. Vans full of people come from all over the area to attend, says Jan Marcus, secretary at Valley Assembly.

Gospel Opry is held each Thursday at 7 p.m. For more information, call 924-0466.
