No Place Like Home For Titans
The University High boys basketball team hopes continued use of the home-court is to its advantage.
The Titans begin a pivotal three-game home stand on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, U-Hi hosts Shadle Park in a game pitting teams that shared second place heading into last night’s games.
Next Friday, the Titans face unbeaten league leader Ferris and complete the series the following Tuesday against North Central.
In its last home game on Tuesday, the Titans improved to 3-1 in the GSL with its 59-48 win over Rogers.
U-Hi built a 30-15 halftime lead, shooting better from the field than it did from the free throw line.
Overall, the team hit 64 percent from the floor and just 56 percent from the line.
Erik Carlson scored 20 points and Jeff Price scored 16.
Since the holiday break Price has been afire. He scored 23 points in U-Hi’s win at Lewis and Clark, including three 3-point goals.
Enough, already
As if the Central Valley girls basketball team’s depth problems weren’t enough, the new year brought more injury woes to the GSL’s second-place team.
Substitute Lindsey Shoquist broke her leg in a sledding accident and starting point guard Rikki Jackson sprained her ankle before the team’s loss to Mead.
Playing virtually every minute, Jackson had 9 points against the Panthers. She had 15 during Tuesday’s thrilling and important 57-56 victory at Gonzaga Prep.
“She stepped up and proved she wanted to be a basketball player,” said coach Dale Poffenroth. “That’s nice to see.”
No sweat for Titan gymnasts
U-Hi’s gymnastics showdown with the other Greater Spokane League contenders was no contest.
The Titans have opened a two-meet lead with three weeks remaining and meet the closest challengers just one time apiece.
They beat runnerup Ferris and third-place Central Valley by more than seven points, 171.5 to 164.15 to 162.75.
Coleen Pierce, Kalie Cosette and Tara Hulbert swept the all-around competition.
Lindsey Brandle was a top-three event finisher in the three disciplines she competed in.
