Pirates Find No Reason To Cry Without Tissue
College women
Jennifer Tissue sat at the end of the bench Friday night, nursing her chronically aching back, but the Whitworth College women’s team didn’t need its talented point guard as the Pirates easily defeated Linfield College 58-39 in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The lopsided game allowed Whitworth coach Helen Higgs to use all of her available players. However, it was starting shooting guard Rebecca Moore who stepped in for Tissue at point guard and allowed Whitworth to break away early. The senior scored on a layup with 9:36 left in the first half and followed with a 3-pointer 30 seconds later to give the Pirates a 16-4 lead.
Moore, who had been averaging a team-high 15.8 points per game, finished with a game-high 15. More impressively, the 5-foot-5 outside shooter led all rebounders with 12 and had only four turnovers in 32 minutes.
“I knew we’d be able to take care of them,” said Higgs, whose team improved to 6-5 and 2-1 in the Northwest Conference with Willamette coming in tonight. “I felt we’d match up OK without Tissue because they’re a young team.”
Tissue is questionable for tonight.
Friday’s game was never in doubt. The Pirates jumped ahead 11-3 in the first 5 minutes. Three times, they led by as many as 21 points, the last with 1:16 remaining when reserve freshman forward Cindy Viall scored on a layup.

Nevada 75, Idaho 64
Poor shooting left the Idaho Vandals on the short end of the score in their Big West Conference opener against University of Nevada at Reno, Nev.
Idaho shot 28 percent from the field in the first half and 37 percent from the game. Conversely, Nevada had hot hands. The Wolf Pack made 51 percent of their shots.
Idaho coach Julie Holt was very disappointed.
“The stats speak for themselves,” Holt said. “Nevada played very well and we shot terrible. We missed 12 layups. That’s not going to win ball games,” Holt added.
