Cabin Remains Free

Backcountry skiing

The new fee announced in Outdoors last week for the Snow Peak shelter on the Kettle Crest will not be charged until summer, Colville National Forest officials say.

The fee was scheduled to be charged beginning Jan. 1. The backcountry cabin, which sleeps six people, requires a ski trek of 11 miles round-trip. But since forest officials have not worked out details, the fee will not be charged this winter, said recreation specialist Keith Wakefield.

Reservations still are required, however. Contact the Republic Ranger District, (509) 775-3305. , DataTimes
