Pacific’s 3s Bury Vandals In Second Half
Once Pacific went deep, the Idaho Vandals were in deep trouble.
The streaking Tigers broke open a close game with a second-half 3-point barrage for a 64-54 Big West victory over Idaho Thursday night.
It was the 12th consecutive victory for the Tigers, who are 3-0 in the Big West and 12-1 overall for the best start in school history.
Guard Mark Boelter, the Big West 3-point field goal leader, connected on a pair to spark a 10-2 run for a 31-22 lead early in the second half. Boelter finished with four 3-pointers.
Rayne Mahaffey had a 3-pointer among his seven points in a 13-5 spree that created a 44-31 Pacific lead.
Boelter led Pacific with 18 points and Mahaffey added 16.
Senior center Jason Jackman scored 17 points for Idaho (7-9, 0-3), including 11 in the second half.
The sluggish Tigers fell behind 6-0 and didn’t score for the first 5:21, matching their least productive half of the season. Still, four consecutive points by Mahaffey produced a 21-18 lead at halftime.
Pacific was without 7-foot center Michael Olowokandi, its scoring and rebounding leader, who suffered a sprained left knee in the previous game and is listed as questionable this week.
