Colfax’s Bob Bafus became the third coach in state history with 600 career wins Saturday as his Bulldogs stopped foulplagued Deer Park 81-25 in a Northeast A League game.

Bafus joins Mercer Island’s Ed Pepple and Naselle’s Lyle Patterson in the exclusive club. All are active, but Bafus is retiring after this year and Patterson isn’t expected to be retained.

Except for a four-year hiatus in the mid-1980s, Bafus has been Colfax’s coach since 1968.

A crowd of 1,000 attended the game. The team presented Bafus with a cake and pink slip.

Saturday’s outcome was never in doubt after a first half that included 24 DP fouls. Colfax (3-10, 3-4) made 24 of 40 free throws in the half and 28 of 45 for the game.

The Stags (0-13, 0-7), who have lost 17 straight, committed 33 turnovers. Colfax’s Bob Stoner scored 17 of his 21 in the first half and added 13 rebounds and five steals.
