Ups Trips Whitworth On Late 3-Pointer

Whitworth’s losing streak reached two on Saturday by the slimmest of margins. Puget Sound held off a late rally to beat the NAIA No. 7-ranked Pirates 75-73 in Tacoma on a 3-pointer by Manny Martucci with 8 seconds remaining.
Whitworth’s Gabe Jones missed a 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key as the buzzer sounded.
A day after falling by one to Pacific Lutheran University, Whitworth fell behind by as many as 10 points to UPS before rallying in the final minutes.
Ben Heimerman, who finished with 24 points, gave the Pirates a 73-72 lead with 57 seconds left after a steal and layup.
Nate Williams hit two 3-pointers and Jones knocked in another in the final stages of the game to bring Whitworth back.
Williams had 19 points and eight assists for Whitworth, now 10-3 overall and 4-2 in NCIC. UPS is 8-6, 2-4.
