Dollar Ends Slightly Lower Vs. Yen

The dollar weakened slightly against the yen Tuesday on contradictory remarks by Japanese officials about the yen’s value, but the U.S. currency ended mostly higher in other foreign-exchange dealings.

A cut in Italian interest rates, fresh evidence of economic weakness in Germany and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan’s generally upbeat view of the U.S. economy helped underpin the U.S. currency.

The dollar has been rallying fairly steadily since late last year and is now trading near 46-month highs vs. the yen and 2-year highs vs. the mark.
