Sixteen players from Ethiopia’s national soccer team dropped from sight during a stopover in Rome while on their way to a tournament in Morocco, Italian officials said.

Two players, the coach and four staff members of the team remained behind in a hotel in Ostia, near Rome’s international airport.

Bernard C. “Bert” Kuczynski, a Philadelphia native who in 1943 became the first to play major-league pro baseball and football during the same season, has died at 77.

In 1943, Kuczynski, a University of Pennsylvania graduate, pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics and played football for the Detroit Lions.
