Uconn: Ncaa Ruling Too Harsh

New York Times

The NCAA issued its verdict against the University of Connecticut on Friday, suspending the captain of the men’s basketball team, senior Kirk King, for the remainder of the season, and ruling that sophomore Ricky Moore will have to sit out three more games.

The penalties, which stemmed from free airline tickets that each player accepted from an agent in order to fly home in October 1995, were criticized as too severe by the university, which said it would appeal the decision with the backing of the Big East Conference.

Both UConn and the Big East had recommended that the players miss two more games in addition to the two they had missed, pay back the cost of the tickets and perform community service. UConn had reported the infractions to the NCAA more than a week ago and had not allowed King and Moore to play in games against Kansas and Miami, both UConn losses.
