Gray’s 28 Helps Cal Dump UW

Ed Gray had 28 points on 12-for-20 shooting and California outscored Washington 26-4 in a decisive second-half stretch of an easy 80-52 victory over the Huskies on Saturday night in Berkeley, Calif.

California (14-5, 5-3) won its 14th straight at Harmon Gym and seventh of nine overall against Washington (10-5, 3-4). The Golden Bears have won four straight and five of six to move into fourth place in the Pac-10.

Cal led 37-25 behind Gray’s 17 points at the half. The Huskies scored the first four points of the second half. Todd MacCulloch’s basket 2 minutes into the half cut the lead to 37-29.

Gray then took over, scoring nine of the Bears’ next 20 points while the Huskies missed 7 of 8 shots over 7 minutes.

It was 57-31 after a Kenyon Jones lay-in with 10:45 to go, and 63-33 when Sean Marks scooped one in with 9:30 remaining.

In Tucson, Ariz., Michael Dickerson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half and the Wildcats defeated the Ducks for their 12th straight victory.

Arizona (12-4, 5-2) withstood several second-half comeback attempts by the Ducks, who got 18 points from Jamal Lawrence.

Oregon (11-5, 2-5) trailed 37-23 at halftime, but Lawrence led a 10-2 run with a pair of 3-pointers that brought the Ducks within 42-35.

The Wildcats regrouped with a free throw from Dickerson, a three-point play by Bennett Davison and a short jumper from Miles Simon to open a 48-35 lead.

Mike Bibby scored 19 points for Arizona. Davison, Jason Terry and Simon added 11 each.

Jeremy Veal scored nine of his career-high 29 points in overtime as the Sun Devils (10-9, 2-5) beat the Beavers (5-11, 1-6) in a battle of Pac-10 cellar-dwellers in Tempe, Ariz.

Eddie House added 16 points for the Sun Devils, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Carson Cunningham had 15 points to lead Oregon State, which lost for the seventh time in its past eight outings.

Reserve guard B.J. Flynn scored 16 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 37 seconds left, to lift the Cardinals to a non-conference victory over the visiting Bruins.

Louisville (16-2) overcame UCLA’s 55 percent shooting (26 of 47) by getting a 27-5 edge in points from the bench. Reserve forward Eric Johnson also gave the Cardinals a boost with 10 points and five rebounds.

UCLA (11-5) had won its last four games.
