Hints From Heloise
Dear Heloise: Help! Can you possibly tell me what I can use to get rid of silverfish without using chemical sprays? Ruth Lombardo, Port Charlotte, Fla.
Most garden centers can help you find an organic product containing boric acid or pyrethrum that should do the trick in ridding your home of these pesky insects. Be sure to read the label carefully before applying, because both can be toxic if ingested in large quantities.
Silverfish are usually brought in by an outside source such as furniture, old books, papers or food containers. Silverfish tend to eat things high in protein and carbohydrates, like flour and cereal, and paper that has glue on it such as books and wallpaper. They like high humidity and prefer the lower levels of your home but are sometimes seen in the attic, too.
For more information on silverfish or other home invaders, you can contact your local agricultural extension service.
If you have other pesky critters roaming around your home and would like a copy of my bug pamphlet containing info on exterminating and preventing insect infestation, please send $2, along with a self-addressed, stamped (55 cents) long envelope to: Heloise/Bugs, PO Box 795001, San Antonio TX 78279-5001. - Heloise
