Amber Stiles had eight rebounds Wednesday to lead a seven-rebound edge as Yakima Valley Community College’s women beat visiting Community Colleges of Spokane 70-55 for their initial conference win.

With its 37-30 rebounding edge, YVCC (13-9, 1-6 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) became the sixth consecutive team to outrebound the Sasquatch (16-7, 4-3). Karen Phillips scored 17 on 7-of-13 shooting to guide the Indians.

“It’s just amazing we’re not coming to the intensity of the teams we’re playing,” said CCS coach Bruce Johnson.

CCS, trailing by six points at halftime, tied the score with 15 minutes left before faltering with turnovers.

Joe Deutsch, of Medical Lake, scored 20 on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and added nine rebounds to guide the Indians (17-2, 7-0) over the visiting Sasquatch (6-15, 0-7).

CCS took a one-point lead into the second half but committed 14 turnovers in the final 20 minutes. Sasquatch wings Rob DeBeaumont and Kasey Ahrens combined to miss 15 of 16 field-goal attempts.
