Legion Finalists Determined Today

Final round-robin games of the Spokane American Legion Fourth of July Tournament today will determine finalists in both the senior and junior divisions.

The Spokane Valley Cannons play twice today at Shadle Park. The Cannons face the Billings (Mont.) Royals at 3 p.m. and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen at 6 p.m.

The Cannons are made up of players from Central Valley, East Valley and West Valley high schools.

The Browne Mountain Bandits, with players from University and Freeman, finish up their five-game schedule at 3 p.m. against El Segundo, Calif., in Seafirst Stadium.

Defending Junior Division champion Olympic Sports of University, which lost 7-3 to Spokane Athletic Supply from Central Valley in Thursday’s 8 a.m. eye-opener, completes its schedule at 3:30 p.m. today against the Yakima Valley Peppers at Central Valley High School.

Other Valley teams play twice today. Strike Zone, from West Valley, plays B&C Telephone of Nine Mile Falls at 8 a.m. and Bellevue Honda at 10:30 a.m. at CV.

Spokane Athletic Supply plays Bellevue Legion at 10:30 a.m. and Yakima Valley at 1 p.m. at CV.

Following the tournament, the teams return to league action on Monday.

The Bandits currently are on a five-game winning streak and share the Spokane AAA league lead with a 9-3 record.

Included was a 12-4 win over the Cannons, one of two successive Cannon losses that dropped the team two games off the pace.

Halfway through the season, Cannon Bill Tincup leads the league in hitting with a .540 average. Right behind are Bandits Josh Sheffield and Andy Dunham with .500 and .480 averages, respectively.

Cannon Raif Jochim at .443, Bandit Brett Haiar at .428 and Cannon Jeremy Isherwood at .420 are also among the league’s top 10.

Pitcher Sean Ruscio of the Bandits is second in ERA at 2.45 and Cannon Nate Bartlett is fourth at 4.14.

Olympic Sports moved closer to second place in the AA league despite not playing a game last week.

Current South Division runnerup Eagle Hardware/Pepsi has lost twice and leads Olympic by a game.

Spokane Athletic Supply, with its 7-6 win over Spokane Federal Credit Union, has won five straight times.

From penthouse to outhouse

A rostering snafu cost Spokane Insulation its chance at a playoff in the American Legion A League.

The team from Central Valley had won 8 of 9 games and was in second place in the league. But when it was determined a player was ineligible by rule, the players chose to forfeit their games rather than play without their teammate.

As a result, Food Rainbow/ Carstens Marine, another CV team, and Wycoff Hydraulics from East Valley moved into third and fourth place and into the playoff picture.

Whitley for president

Liberty Lake Ladies 18-Hole Club golfer Cathy Whitley is this year’s winner of the President’s Cup.

Whitley’s three-week tournament net score of 205 was low for the field after recording a final round 64.

First flight winner was Kerri Barham at 210, six strokes ahead of runnerup Patty Aunan.

Second flight went to Jean Fulks with 226, over Marlene Thies’s 229.

Third flight winner was Anne Meyers by a stroke over Marcea Seimers, 227 to 228.

There was a tie for fewest putts, Jean Hatcher catching up to Alice Shattuck. The pair ended at 91 apiece.

Meyers stays hot

Net winners were Min Arnold with 30 in A flight, Ellen Lentes and Genevra Barrett with 31s in B flight, Laura Odette and Bea Bladek with 35s in C.
