Deion Foils Kile’s Bid For No-Hitter

Houston’s Darryl Kile lost a bid for his second career no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning when Deion Sanders lined a single to right field and the Astros went on to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night in Houston.

Sanders hit an 0-1 pitch to end the no-hit bid. Kile, who had a no-hitter against the New York Mets on Sept. 8, 1993, in Houston, then struck out Curtis Goodwin for his 12th strikeout to match his career-high.

Kile (10-3) allowed a leadoff homer to Willie Greene in the ninth inning and was replaced by Billy Wagner who got three outs for his 15th save.

San Diego

Ismael Valdes threw five shutout innings before he was injured running out a ground ball and Eric Karros drove in three runs to lead Los Angeles to victory over San Diego.

Mets 5, Marlins 3

Edgardo Alfonzo, who extended his career-high hitting streak to 18 games, and Carlos Baerga each hit a solo home run to lead New York to victory over Florida.

Chipper Jones hit his second career grand slam and Tom Glavine pitched eight strong innings as Atlanta held on for its fifth straight win and 10th in 11 games.

Giants 2, Rockies 1

San Francisco

Jeff Kent’s RBI single broke an eighth-inning tie and gave San Francisco a victory over struggling Colorado, which has lost all five of its games in July.

Colorado’s Larry Walker broke an 0-for-15 slump and went 2 for 3 to raise his average to .395.

Pirates 4, Cardinals 3

St. Louis

Turner Ward had the first four-hit game of his career and drove in the tie-breaking run as Pittsburgh extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with a victory over St. Louis.

Phillies 9, Cubs 7

Philadelphia

Kevin Stocker and Scott Rolen combined for five RBIs as Philadelphia snapped an 11-game losing streak with a come-from-behind win over Chicago.

Stocker went 3 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Clearing the bases

Mets catcher Todd Hundley, who missed his third straight game with a right elbow problem Saturday, said he will go to but probably not play in next week’s All-Star Game… . Atlanta Braves center fielder Kenny Lofton, only the second player selected to both the American League and National League All-Star teams in consecutive years, may not make an appearance in this year’s game because he’s been on the disabled list for two weeks with a groin strain. … Philadelphia Phillies pitching ace Curt Schilling informed the club that he would be willing to waive the no-trade clause in his contract if the club wanted to make a midseason deal to unload payroll and bolster the minor-league system.
