Hastings Tops Teen Golf Field

Michael Hastings of Spokane shot a 2-under-par 70 for a one-shot lead Thursday at the halfway point of the Maxfli Pacific Northwest PGA Junior Golf Championship at Tumwater, Wash.

Hastings, atop the boys 16-17 age group, heads Spokane’s Corey Prugh and Brock MacKenzie of Yakima entering today’s final round. Prugh, who stands atop the 14-15 group, and Hastings are Ferris High School students.

Brandon Smith of Central Valley High and Shadle Park High grad Robert Selland remain in contention. Smith shot a 72, one stroke ahead of Selland and Michael Larson of Fall City, Wash.

The overall boys and girls winners will advance to the Maxfli Junior Championship Aug. 21-24 at Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Baseball

Joe Kernkamp pitched a no-hitter as Granny’s Buffet topped Washington Trust Bank 7-0 in a AA American Legion game.

Basketball

The Spokane Blue Devils boys U14 basketball team earned a fourth-place finish in the national BCI tournament at Dallas.

The Blue Devils, coached by Ron Benzel, had not previously finished better than fifth.
