Obituaries

Rodney Palmer Oakesdale, Wash.

Service for Rodney S. Palmer, 80, is planned for 10 a.m. today at the Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow at the Garfield (Wash.) Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Palmer died Monday.

He was born in Tekoa, Wash., and was a 40-year Oakesdale resident.

He attended schools in Palouse.

In 1936 he married Genevieve Barnes in Spokane and they settled in Palouse.

Mr. Palmer worked on the section crew for the Washington, Idaho, and Montana Railroad and also worked for Allen V. Smith’s and Wallace Grain and Pea Co. in Palouse.

The family later moved to Oakesdale, where Mr. Palmer worked as a warehouse foreman for the Oakesdale Grain Growers. He retired in 1983.

His wife, Genevieve, died in 1985.

Mr. Palmer is survived by five sons, Stanley Palmer of Sweet Home, Ore., Bruce and Michael Palmer, both of Oakesdale, and Tony and Dennis Palmer, both of Spokane; a daughter, Norma Cook of Spokane; a sister, Wilma Rothrock of Spokane; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oakesdale Fire Department or the Spokane Valley Good Samaritan Village.

Ervin Schimmels Spokane

Memorial Mass for Ervin D. Schimmels, 85, will be at 9 a.m today at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schimmels, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

He worked as a blacksmith with his father at the Bremerton shipyards during World War II.

After the war he returned to Spokane and worked for Inland Empire Paper Co. He retired as a millwright.

Mr. Schimmels was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Gentlemen on Horseback, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Two wives preceded him in death, Joyce (Anderson) died in 1944, and Fern (Ray) died in 1995.

He is survived by two daughters, Joyce Miller of Spokane and Marilyn McKee of Bend, Ore.; four sisters, Lolly Rothrock of Spokane, Lois Shinn of Moses Lake, Rosella Weidner of Hayden Lake, Idaho, and Doryce Farrell of Mercedes, Texas; a brother, Charles Schimmels of California; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a stepgrandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mid-Oregon Special Olympics in Bend or Holy Family Adult Care.

Arthur Larson Spokane

Service for Arthur E. Larson, 81, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Cremation will follow.

Mr. Larson, a 61-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

He was born in Chinook, Mont.

He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He worked as a barber out of his home. He retired in 1975.

Survivors include his wife of more than 60 years, Edna; four sons, Robert Larson of Athol, Idaho, Lonnie Larson of Elk, and Donald and Chris Larson, both of Spokane; three daughters, Glenda Bakken of Colbert, Gayle Larson of Redmond, Wash., and Deanna Webb of Spokane; three brothers, Gunnar Larson of Libby, Mont., Ove Larson of Troy, Mont., and Robert Larson of Placerville, Calif.; two sisters, Magna Knaggs of Loon Lake, Wash., and Alice Ingebretsen of Spokane; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Bible Church.

Jean Anderson Spokane

Service for Jean Anderson, 94, is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Anderson, a 74-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

She was born in Madisonville, Tenn.

Mrs. Anderson worked in retail sales for the Palace and The Crescent department stores.

She was a member of North Hill Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Royal Anderson.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Anderson of Midland, Texas, and Harold Anderson of Lincoln City, Ore.; four granddaughters and seven great-grandchildren.

John Byrne Spokane

Service for John “Jack” Byrne, 65, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home.

Entombment will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Byrne, who was born in Portland, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and attended Washington State College.

He had lived in Spokane for more that 50 years and was president of Byrne Machinery Co..

Mr. Byrne was a member of the Manito Golf and County Club, the Associated General Contractors and the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Dorothy; two sons, Donald and Jim Byrne, both of Spokane; a brother, Robert Byrne of Spokane; and three grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jean Michelson Spokane

Memorial service for Jean B. “Granny” Michelson, 78, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Rock Chapel at Fairmount Memorial Park. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Michelson, who was born in Buffalo, Mont., died Tuesday.

She worked as a nurse at Holy Family Hospital and was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary.

Her husband, Theodore Michelson, died in 1968.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary Richards of Puyallup, Wash., and Kathleen Small of Newman Lake; a stepdaughter, Shirley Swingley of Spokane; two sisters, two brothers, eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagles Lodge.

Eli Hattamer Greenacres

Graveside service for Eli Ralph Hattamer, 23, will be at 9 a.m. today at the St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the Life Center. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hattamer, who was born in Kirkland, Wash., died Tuesday.

He was a University High School graduate and was involved in rock climbing and the Young Life Youth Ministry.

He is survived by his parents, Eric and Susie Hattamer of Greenacres, and Cathy and Mike Kilgore of Spokane; three brothers, Scott Krentel and David Kilgore, both of Spokane, and Will Hattamer of Greenacres; three sisters, Sara Krentel and Annie Kilgore, both of Spokane, and Erica Hattamer of Greenacres; and his grandparents, Ralph and Rose Hattamer, and Herman and Helen Curry, all of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Young Life Youth Ministry.

Colleen (Shaw) Winter Spokane

Burial service for Colleen K. (Shaw) Winter, 52, will be at 10 a.m. today at the Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Winter, who was born in St. Maries, died Tuesday.

She graduated from St. Maries High School and later worked in radio advertising sales for KGA in Spokane.

Mrs. Winter is survived by two sons, Todd Winter of Randall, Wash., and Jim Winter of Spokane; a daughter, Sally Pennington of Wasilla, Alaska; her twin sister, Skip Shaw of Spokane; numerous half-sisters and half-brothers and eight grandchildren.

Beverly Montague Spokane

Memorial service for Beverly A. Montague, 65, will be at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Alpha House at Country Crossroads Christian Church. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Montague, who was born in Spokane, died July 4.

She was a member of Country Crossroads Christian Church and worked as the church secretary and pianist.

Mrs. Montague is survived by two sons, Howard Montague of Montana and James Davis of Airway Heights; a sister, Jeane Loundigan of Spokane; her stepmother, Virginia LaBlance of Spokane; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Lester Low Cheney

Graveside service for Lester L. Low, 76, will be at 11 a.m. today at the Fairview Cemetery in Cheney. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Odessa, Wash., Mr. Low died Wednesday.

He served in the Marine Corps during World War II.

Mr. Low was the founder and owner of Golden Rule Brakes.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Medical Lake.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Eunice; a son, Jerry Low of Spokane; two daughters, Sandra Shipley of Medical Lake and Gayle Ann Lowery of Spokane; two brothers, two sisters, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dean Hitchcock Spokane

No service will be held for Dean B. Hitchcock, 66, at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hitchcock, who was born in Truckton, Colo., died Sunday.

He was a 50-year Spokane resident and worked as an auto mechanic.

Mr. Hitchcock was a member of Eagles Lodge No. 2. and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by two daughters, Vickie Evers of Spokane and Cheryl Gardner of Seattle; three brothers, Kenneth, Marvin and Ringo Hitchcock, all of Spokane; five sisters, Marjorie Newman of Houston, Nadine Kjeldgoard of Tacoma, Karen Hester and Donna Russell, both of Cusick, Wash., and Linda Irons of Prosser, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

Tommy Eng San Francisco

Service for Tommy S. Eng, 84, will be Sunday at Victory Hall in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Green Street Mortuary in San Francisco is in charge of arrangement.

Mr. Eng, who was born in Canton, China, died July 2.

In 1931 he married Ellen Lee in China.

He owned the Oriental Restaurant in Pullman for more than 50 years.

He was a member of Whitman Masonic Lodge No. 49, Scottish Rite, El Katif Shrine, Good Fellowship Club, Kiwanis Club, Pullman Chamber of Commerce and the Cougar Club.

Mr. Eng was also a member of the Eng Family Association and the Hip Sing Association, had served as a representative to the International Convention of the Eng Families and was an official delegate representing the Chinese community.

He moved to San Francisco from Pullman in 1977.

Mr. Eng is survived by his wife; three sons, Kenneth and Albert Eng, both of Pullman, and Robert Eng of Los Altos, Calif.; a daughter, Pey Li of San Francisco; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tommy S. Eng Endowed Football Scholarship at Washington State University Foundation.

Carl Stover Spokane

Private service for Carl Stover, 82, was Friday at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Born in Prineville, Ore., Mr. Stover, died Wednesday.

He served in the Marines during World War II and moved to Spokane in 1954.

He worked as a manager for State of Washington Surplus Property and later was a bus driver for Central Valley School District. He retired in 1972.

He was a member of the Elks and Moose lodges.

Mr. Stover is survived by his wife of 45 years, Virginia; two sons, Rick Stover of Kent, Wash., and R.L. Stover of Ivins, Utah; two daughters, Sue Caicedo of Evergreen, Colo., and Laura Grubaugh of Tigard, Ore.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Adam Crane Spokane

Memorial service for Adam Seth Crane, 16, will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Edgecliff Park. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Adam disappeared on Feb. 3, and his body was found July 5 in Latah Creek.

He was born in Spokane.

He attended Ferris High School and was a member of the Spokane American Youth Hockey Association.

Survivors include his mother, Peggy Crane of Spokane; three sisters, Kim Jones of Clayton, Wash., and Kathi Holford and Kristi Crane, both of Spokane; and a brother, Billy Crane of Spokane.

Charles ‘Bud’ Pears Silverton, Idaho

Memorial service for Charles F. “Bud” Pears, 85, will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Wallace Funeral Chapel. Shoshone Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pears, who was born in Hillyard, Wash., died Friday.

He graduated from Deer Lodge (Mont.) High School.

Mr. Pears was the former owner of several businesses, including the Avery Trading Post and the Wallace Smoke Shop.

He was a member of the Wallace Elks Lodge, the International Order of Odd Fellows Galena Lodge, the Shoshone Shriners, the Masonic Lodge Calam Temple of Lewiston and the Wallace and Murray Chambers of Commerce.

He had served as a volunteer with the Prichard Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret; a son, Edward Pears of Seattle; three daughters, Sandra Hjort of Colorado, Lynda Chadwick of California, and Shirley Whalen of Las Vegas; a brother, Virgil Pears of Montana; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
