Dress Down For A Date With Slime

Lynn Gibson Correspondent

If you are brave and brash, simply bellow: “I want to get slimed!” or hold up a giant sign that reads “PICK ME.”

These are the most effective ways of getting selected to participate in “U Pick Nick,” Nickelodeon’s new family show, coming to Spokane this week.

Kids of all ages can try these attention-getting antics on Saturday when the cable television network brings its live show to the Opera House, performing at 1:30 p.m.

The Kellogg Co. sponsors “U Pick Nick,” where dozens of kids and adults are randomly selected from the audience to join the on-stage action in a variety of stunts and games.

Families wearing lime-green wigs and orange-fluorescent clothing have a good chance of being noticed.

Kids with a flair for theatrics can paint their faces with “Gak,” the gooey greenish substance made famous by Nickelodeon.

For the more reserved, simply stand in a dignified position and perform the wave with your family. The host may look your way. The trademark ingredient of “U Pick Nick” is audience participation. More than 80 members of the audience will be invited on stage to help create and perform in the variety show.

Cable television’s Nickelodeon dubs itself “the only network just for kids” and offers an array of news and game shows, adventure and animation. For the past five years, the cable network has taken a sampling of its most popular programs on the road, performing live shows throughout the country.

Nickelodeon favorites such as “Family Double Dare,” “Nickelodeon GUTS,” “What Would You Do?” and “Legends of the Hidden Temple” are re-created in an interactive format that engages and entertains audiences.

“The best part about watching ‘U Pick Nick,’ ” says host Bryan Stinson, “is that the adults get thoroughly involved in the action, and are usually surprised at how entertaining it is for them, as well as their kids.”

Will there be prizes for the audience participants? You bet.

Several winners will be rewarded the golden opportunity to use The Pie Pod, a 5-arm mechanical pie-throwing device. Others can venture a visit to the Wall O’ Stuff where 10 secret doors reveal various surprises.

The highest honor for “U Pick Nick” winners is a shot at the Sliminator, Nick’s newest invention that douses kids with green slime. Marvelous.

Some words to the wise: dress for a mess. And for those who would rather observe than participate, do not yell, “Slime me!”

Whether slimed or not, “U Pick Nick” is certain to provide summer smiles for all.

“U Pick Nick” performs at the Spokane Opera House this Saturday (originally scheduled for Friday) at 1:30 p.m. Reserved seating tickets are $12 and $14, available at all G & B Select-A-Seat outlets. For ticket information, call 325-SEAT.
