Obituaries

Ida Phillips Spokane

Service for Ida Mae Phillips, 83, was Wednesday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Private inurnment was at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mrs. Phillips, who was born in Tooele, Utah, died July 1.

She attended the University of Utah and later went into music education and taught school in Idaho Falls, Idaho, before moving to Palmer, Alaska.

In 1945 she moved to Spokane and taught for the Spokane School District. She also taught at Four Lakes Elementary School in Cheney.

Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi at the University of Utah and the Women of Moose.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence “Larry” Phillips.

Survivors include a son, Monte Phillips of Chicago; a stepdaughter, Jean Phillips of Colville, Wash.; a brother, William Mahoney of Salt Lake City; seven stepgrandchildren and numerous stepgreat-grandchildren.

Rita Roitz Lewiston

Private graveside service for Rita F. Roitz, 82, was Saturday at Holy Cross Cemetery in Spokane. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Roitz, who was born in Spokane, died Thursday.

She graduated from North Central High School and Holy Names College.

In 1941 she married Henry Roitz in Valley, Wash. He died in 1983.

She taught first grade for Spokane School District 81 and was a member of the Spokane and National Education associations, and the Spokane and Washington Retired Teachers associations.

Mrs. Roitz was also a member of St. Charles Parish and guild, the Corbin Art Center, and the Moose Lodge.

She had lived in Lewiston since May.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Kolb of Lewiston; and two grandsons.

Bonita (Jessee) Baldwin Spokane

Private family service for Bonita (Jessee) Baldwin, 81, was Saturday at the Heritage Funeral Home. Burial was held at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mrs. Baldwin, who was born in Walla Walla, died Thursday.

She graduated from Walla Walla High School.

In 1936 she married Corwin “Corky” Baldwin in Yakima. She had lived in Spokane for 13 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Baldwin is survived by her husband; a son, Robert Baldwin of Veradale; two daughters, Beverly Vandemark of Salem, Ore., and Deanne Bootz of Spokane; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pamela Kleinbeck Coeur d’Alene

Service for Pamela A. Kleinbeck, 55, is set for 11 a.m. today at the Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Born in South Dakota, Mrs. Kleinbeck died July 8.

She graduated from high school in South Dakota and then moved to Ellensburg.

She was the director of the Western Art Show and Auction in Ellensburg for eight years. She moved to Coeur d’Alene 12 years ago.

Mrs. Kleinbeck was active in 4-H and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Kootenai Medical Center Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband of 27 years, Lee; her mother, Marianne Utphall of Wisconsin; her stepmother, Dorothy Josten of South Dakota; three stepsons, Mark Kleinbeck of Pinehurst, Idaho, Patrick Kleinbeck of Kent, Wash., and James Kleinbeck of Seattle; four stepdaughters, Venetia and Shannon, both of Kent, Wash., and Valerie and Pamula, both of Seattle; and seven stepgrandchildren.

John Seipp Spokane

Service for John M. Seipp, 78, will be at 1 p.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Seipp, who was born in Crosby, N.D., died Thursday.

He served in the Army during World War II and earned a Purple Heart.

Mr. Seipp was a co-owner of Seipp Brothers Building Moving in Spokane for many years and later worked for the Rosalia Producers in Plaza, Wash., for 10 years.

He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and Disabled American Veterans.

Mr. Seipp is survived by his wife of 56 years, Roberta; a son, Dennis Seipp of Spokane; a daughter, Bonnie Rae Beard of Sumner, Wash.; four brothers, Greg Seipp, Justin Seipp, Bill Seipp and Bob Seipp; five sisters, Angie Joyce, Dorothy Skailand, Caroline Arnot, Jane Wagner and Evelyn McAdams; and four grandchildren.

Joseph Webb Jr. San Clemente, Calif.

Memorial service for Joseph K. Webb Jr., 60, will be at 3 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home.

Mr. Webb was born in Miami, Okla.

He died July 5 in San Clemente after being struck by a motor vehicle.

He graduated from Columbia High School in Richland and attended college in Pasco and Bellevue, Wash.

He worked for Cedar Rapids Engineering in Spokane from 1971 to 1982.

Mr. Webb was a sales manager for O’Hara Technologies in San Clemente for the last 10 years.

He is survived by his former wife Gale Brackins of Spokane; a son, Joseph Webb of San Clemente; three daughters, Tracy Brucick of Spokane, Jill Ellis of Newman Lake and Kristen Hickman of Tacoma; his stepfather E. H. Bensch of Seattle; three brothers, Ernie Bensch of Vancouver, Wash., John Bensch of Seattle and Doug Bensch of San Francisco; a sister, Susan Hackney of Mukilteo, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

William Hazel Spirit Lake

Private family service for William Desmond Hazel, 83, will be at a later date. English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hazel, who died Monday, was born in Laclede, Idaho.

During World War II he served with the 15th Army Air Corps as a mechanic for B-24 bombers in Italy.

After his military service he returned to the Spirit Lake area and worked as a machine operator at Kaiser Aluminum’s Trentwood plant for 29 years. He retired in 1977.

Mr. Hazel was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1473.

His wife, Gladys, died earlier this year.

Survivors include three sons, Clifford Golden of Spokane, Fred Golden of Spirit Lake and Charles Hazel of Hauser Lake, Idaho; a daughter, Billie Jo Sauter of Spirit Lake; a sister, Joy Wright of Seattle; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Rodger Riekena Redding, Calif.

Memorial service for Rodger D. Riekena, 62 was Friday at Travis Air Force Base in California.

Mr. Riekena, who was born in Missoula, died July 3.

He served in the Air Force for four years. After his discharge in 1956, he came to Spokane.

In 1961, he married Liz Lamb in Spokane.

He worked for Broadway Truck Stop and later was a truck driver for B-Line Transport and Consolidated Freightways.

They moved to Alaska in 1974 and had lived in Redding since 1990.

Mr. Riekena is survived by his wife; a daughter, Julia of Sacramento, Calif.; two sons, Blake and Christopher, both of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Larry of Spanaway, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

Helen ‘Penny’ Dennis Spokane

Visitation for Helen F. “Penny” Dennis, 72, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and for 8 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Heritage Funeral Home. Service will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Dennis, who was born Quapaw, Okla., died Thursday.

She was a 42-year Spokane resident and a homemaker.

Mrs. Dennis is survived by four sons, Rockney Brumbaugh of Newport, Wash., Stephen Brumbaugh, and Daniel and Douglas Dennis, all of Spokane; three daughters, Melody Geer of Bothell, Wash., Tracy Cole of Eureka, Mont., and Penny Kafton of Spokane; two sisters, Wilba Dillinger and LaDean Johnson both of Miami, Okla.; 16 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Nyla ‘Nikki’ O’Malley Spokane

Memorial service for Nyla C. “Nikki” O’Malley, 60, is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the Valley Fourth Memorial Church. Burial was at Pinegrove Cemetery in Rathdrum, Idaho. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. O’Malley, who was born in South Dakota, died July 8.

She had lived in Spokane for 55 years and worked as a bookkeeper.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Donald; two sons, Robert Tillett of Spokane and Terry Tillett of Livingston, Mont.; three sisters, Ina Hennessey of Vancouver, Wash., Avon Childs and Unice Sampson, both of Killdeer, N.D.; three brothers, Doyle Singer of Vass, N.C., Del Singer of Spokane and Darnell Singer of Lynnwood, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

Sandy Concha Spokane

Funeral Mass for Sandy Marie Concha, 39, was Thursday at Mount St. Michael Church in Spokane.

Ms. Concha died July 4 while visiting her sister in Ogden, Utah.

She had lived in Spokane for 31 years and worked as an administrative assistant and cook.

Survivors include her mother, Jessie Concha of Riverside, Calif.; and a sister, Diana Concha of Ogden.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount St. Michael Church.

Beverly Erickson Spokane

Memorial service for Beverly Jean Erickson, 69, will be at 1 p.m. today at the Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mrs. Erickson, who was born in Wing, N.D., died Tuesday.

She worked as a real estate closer and formerly owned Bonded Closing. She had also worked for Lloyd and Herman Attorneys.

Mrs. Erickson was a member of the Brotherhood of Friends and the Moose Lodge.

She is survived by three sons, Gary Erickson of Medical Lake, Dennis Erickson of Spokane and David Erickson of Airway Heights; two daughters, Cheryll Erickson of Spokane and Mary Naccarato of Oldtown, Idaho; a brother, Donald Boss of Las Vegas; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

John Melchert Cheney

No service will be held for John C. Melchert, 71, at his request. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Melchert, who was born in New Bremen, Ohio, died Saturday.

He had lived in Cheney for 14 years and had worked as a psychologist.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, June; four daughters, Noel Melchert and Rachel Stearman, both of Chicago, Deborah Hartley of Washington Court House, Ohio, and Laurel Melchert of Salt Lake City; a brother, James Melchert of Oakland, Calif.; and six grandchildren.

Judith (Llewellyn) Shindler Rosalia, Wash.

Private service for Judith Ann (Llewellyn) Shindler, 56, will be at 11 a.m. today at St. John (Wash.) Methodist Church. The Cremation Society of Washington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Shindler, who was born in Colfax, Wash., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Eastern Washington University with a bachelors degree and later operated a home-based custom sewing business.

Mrs. Shindler was a longtime Rosalia resident and helped on the family farm. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Richard; four daughters, Debbi Repp of St. John, Wash., Dana Jensen of Kennewick, Sabrina Jones of Helena and Kari Zabala of Spokane; a sister, Linda Vacca of Mercer Island, Wash.; and five grandchildren.

Barbara Lyons Moscow, Idaho

Memorial service for Barbara D. Lyons, 78, will be in September in Whitefish, Mont.

Mrs. Lyons, who was born in Whitefish, died June 1.

She grew up and attended high school in Whitefish, where she also taught Sunday school at the Episcopal Church. She moved to Kellogg in 1938.

Mrs. Lyons moved from Kellogg to Pinehurst, Idaho, in 1970 and then to Moscow in 1981.

She was a musician and volunteer music teacher.

Her husband, Geoffrey, died in 1981.

Survivors include a daughter, Julie Lyons Colbert of Pullman; two sons, Roger Lyons of Moscow and Thomas Lyons of Las Vegas; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Herbert Schumaker Ritzville, Wash.

Service for Herbert A. Schumaker, 74, was held Friday at the Zion Congregational Church in Ritzville. Concluding service and vault interment followed at the Ritzville Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Schumaker, who was born in Lind, Wash., died Tuesday.

He farmed southwest of Ritzville and retired in 1989.

Mr. Schumaker was a member of the Zion Congregational Church in Ritzville, the Ralston Grange, the American Legion Club of Ritzville, and the Ritzville Gun Club.

Mr. Schumaker is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son, Tom Schumaker of Issaquah, Wash.; a daughter, Lona Royer of Troutdale, Ore.; four sisters, Doris Shaw of Hayden, Idaho, Betty Schuler of Ritzville, Rosemary Morlan of Omaha, Neb., and Geraldine Manke of Ritzville; and five grandchildren.

Sister Mary Catherine Carr, S.P. St. Paul, Minn.

Burial Mass for Sister Mary Catherine Carr, 86, was Wednesday at the Home of the Good Shepherd in St. Paul.

Sister Mary Catherine, who was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, died July 3.

She served in Spokane from 1970 to 1992 with the Good Shepherd Home for Women and Miryam’s House of Transition for Women.

She moved to St. Paul in 1992.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Ellen Botch of Spokane.

Emma McClellan Spokane

No service was held for Emma C. McClellan, 88. Private burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. McClellan, who was born Spokane, died Friday.

She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University.

Mrs. McClellan worked for the Peace Corps in Uganda and for Holy Names College.

Her husband, Joseph, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two brothers, Joseph and Julius Dupre, both of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
