The Monarchs (5-5) played without WNBA-scoring leader Ruthie Bolton-Holifield, who was placed on the injured list Tuesday night because of a minor left knee strain sustained against Houston on Saturday. The star guard, averaging 21.1 points, will miss a minimum of three games.

Sacramento, which trailed 39-32 at halftime, used a 6-0 run to take a 74-68 lead with 1:11 left. Pamela McGee broke a 68-68 tie with an inside basket, Chantel Tremitiere followed with a layup and Gordon made a 12-footer.

Lisa Leslie led the Sparks (4-7) with 17 points and Penny Toler had 12.

Byears, who averaged nine minutes in the team’s first nine games, also had 10 rebounds and four assists in the forward’s first start.

A crowd of 8,420 attended the game, the largest since the Monarchs drew 15,259 for their opener.
