Five years ago: A historic accord for deep cuts in tanks and other non-nuclear arms in Europe went into effect, nearly two years after it had been signed by NATO and the now-defunct Warsaw Pact.
One year ago: TWA Flight 800, a Paris-bound Boeing 747, exploded and crashed off Long Island, N.Y., shortly after leaving John F. Kennedy International Airport. All 230 people aboard were killed.
