Blue Jays Snap Angels’ Streak

From Wire Reports

American League

Alex Gonzalez and Benito Santiago homered as the visiting Toronto Blue Jays snapped the Anaheim Angels’ 10-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Friday night.

The Angels, attempting to tie the club record of 11 consecutive victories set in 1964, couldn’t duplicate their offensive performance of a night earlier when they rapped out 12 hits in a 9-4 victory over Detroit.

Woody Williams (5-8) pitched shutout ball until the sixth when Gary DiSarcina doubled and scored on a double-play grounder by Darin Erstad. The right-hander gave up one run on seven hits in 6-2/3 innings with one walk and no strikeouts.

Rookie Kelvim Escobar pitched the ninth for his second save, extending his scoreless streak to 9-1/3 innings.

Santiago put Toronto ahead 2-1 in the seventh with his fourth homer of the season. He also prevented the tying run from reaching second in the ninth, throwing out Tim Salmon attempting to steal second.

Tigers 5, Rangers 4 Arlington, Texas

Bobby Higginson and Brian Hunter each drove in two runs and Willie Blair won his fourth straight decision.

Texas lost for the fourth time in five games. Detroit won for just the third time in nine games since the All-Star break.

Blair (8-4) allowed seven hits and four runs in 6-1/3 innings to set his career high for wins. He struck out three and walked one.

Brewers 6, Yankees 4 Milwaukee

Jeromy Burnitz hit a three-run homer and Jeff D’Amico pitched strongly into the seventh inning.

The Brewers stopped the Yankees’ three-game winning streak.

D’Amico (8-4) gave up a two-run homer to Paul O’Neill in the first, then held the Yankees scoreless until Chad Curtis hit a leadoff homer in the seventh.

White Sox 3, Orioles 0 Baltimore

James Baldwin allowed two hits in seven-plus innings, and a wild pitch by Mike Mussina produced the lead run as Chicago broke a four-game skid.

Albert Belle hit his 21st homer in the eighth as the White Sox sent Baltimore to its ninth loss in 11 games.

The only hits off Baldwin (7-9) were a fifth-inning single by Cal Ripken and a single by Mike Bordick leading off the eighth.

Red Sox 7, Indians 0 Cleveland

Tim Wakefield pitched his first shutout in two years with a six-hitter, and Jeff Frye had three hits and three RBIs.

Wakefield (4-10) baffled the Indians with his 65 mph knuckleball, winning a classic contrast in styles over Bartolo Colon. It was Wakefield’s first shutout since July 9, 1995, a 7-0 win at Minnesota.

Twins 7, Athletics 3 Oakland, Calif.

LaTroy Hawkins ended his five-game losing streak for Minnesota despite Matt Stairs hitting his fifth home run in five games for Oakland.

Hawkins (2-5) won for the first time since June 17. He gave up eight hits. He left after Scott Brosius homered to lead off the ninth inning.

Clearing the bases

The Brewers activated second baseman Fernando Vina from the 60-day DL and promoted relief pitcher Al Reyes from Triple-A Tucson. Vina, 28, had been on the DL since April 20, after breaking his leg April 19. … The Orioles activated Chris Hoiles off the disabled list, three weeks ahead of schedule, and started him behind the plate against the White Sox.
