Dollar And Pound Surge Vs. Mark
The mark tumbled to a 6-year low against the dollar and 7-year low against the pound Tuesday, hurt by a growing conviction that Europe’s single currency will be weak.
The mark’s decline also left the dollar sharply higher against most other European currencies, although it ended only marginally higher vs. the pound and lower against the yen.
An upbeat assessment of the U.S. economy from Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and an effusive rally in the U.S. stock and bond markets also propelled the dollar higher.
