Former New York Islanders owner John Spano, who once bragged that he was worth more than $500 million, could go to prison today if he can’t raise $1.5 million.

Spano was arrested Wednesday on federal bank and wire fraud charges in connection with his bid to buy the N.H.L. team. Although he was released on his own recognizance, a judge said Spano must raise $1.5 million collateral to secure a bail of $3 million by 2 p.m. PDT. If Spano doesn’t come up with the money, he’ll be arrested and sent to an undisclosed prison, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s office said.
