Sonics Sign Cotton
The Seattle SuperSonics signed guard James Cotton, their second-round pick in this year’s National Basketball Association draft, to a one-year contract.
Cotton, selected with the 33rd overall pick in last month’s draft by the Denver Nuggets, was acquired by the SuperSonics in a draft-day trade. Seattle sent its first-round choice, guard Bobby Jackson, to Denver for Cotton and the Nuggets’ second-round pick in 1998.
The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Cotton entered the draft after averaging a school-record 23.5 points a game as a junior at Long Beach State.
Financial terms of the contract weren’t disclosed.
Darrell Walker, the second-youngest and lowest-paid coach in the NBA last season, signed a three-year contract extension with the Toronto Raptors.
Walker made $265,000 last year - last among NBA coaches. His new deal will more than double that, earning him a reported $1.8 million to $2 million over the three seasons.
The New Jersey Nets signed forward Keith Van Horn to a three-year contract a month after acquiring the second overall pick in this year’s NBA draft from the Philadelphia 76ers.
Financial terms weren’t disclosed, although under the rookie salary scale, Van Horn can receive a maximum $9.161 million over the length of the pact.
