Renewal Heartens ‘48 Hours’ Crew

New York Daily News

You could almost hear the corks popping at “48 Hours” last week, after CBS posted its fall schedule and “48,” The Little News Show That Could, was on it. By no means had it been a done deal.

With an average 10.2 million viewers, there were serious doubts “48” would return for a 10th season, despite 16 Emmys, a Peabody and other awards.

The renewal decision rested not with CBS News President Andrew Heyward but Los Angeles-based CBS Entertainment chief Les Moonves, who has contractual authority over prime time.

Moonves, who already had “60 Minutes” and the new “Bryant Gumbel” hour locked in, decided he wanted a third news hour on CBS air.

What he gets is a proud if scarred warhorse that since January 1988 has survived 16 ABC shows, NBC’s “Quantum Leap,” “Law & Order” and, moved to Thursdays in January 1995, “ER,” TV’s most popular show.
