Area Fiddlers Score Well In Regional Competition

Several Inland Northwest musicians were winners in The Northwest Regional Fiddle Contest:

Small Fry Division, Third Place: Casey Driscoll, Liberty Lake.

Junior-Junior Division, Fifth Place: Melissa Jones, Newman Lake.

Young Adult Division, First Place: Amy Gilliam, Pullman.

Adult Division, Fifth Place: Thomas Power, Deer Park.

Senior-Senior Division, Fourth Place: Clair Lundin, Spokane.

Championship Division, First Place: Tony Ludiker, Spokane; Second Place: Luke Bulla, Northport, Wash.; and Fifth Place: Jenny Bulla of Northport.

William Lambert III, a Spokane author, has been selected to have his biographical sketch included in “Who’s Who in the West.”

Lambert has had more than 20 novels published, with translations in several languages, and numerous articles printed in national magazines.

Selection is based solely on reference value.

Magdalena Merrill, a 1994 graduate of Shadle Park High School, was named to the Dean’s List at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She is the daughter of Catherine Merrill of Kettle Falls, Wash.

Tamara Hartman, Spokane, has been named to the Honor Society at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, N.C., where she is a senior, majoring in visual art.

Christine Dibler, a senior at Shadle Park High School, has received a $400 Joseph Heslin Memorial Scholarship. Heslin was a longtime teacher, coach and friend to numerous Shadle Park students.

The University of Idaho’s chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national freshman honorary society, has selected new members. Area students are:

Cheney: Lisa Mansell, daughter of Thomas and Teresa Mansell.

Spokane: Lisa Gutzman, daughter of Steven and Annette Gutzman; Kari Rose, daughter of Robert and Leslie Rose, and Melissa Sherwood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dewitt Sherwood.

Alison Krogel, a Shadle Park High School student, won the Zonta Club of Spokane’s Young Women in Public Affairs Award. Krogel received the $100 award for her involvement in community activities and participation in ways to understand world issues and events. She will now compete on the district level.

Jennifer Meeker, a Ferris High School student, won a merit award and a gift certificate.

Griff Shelley, a first-grade student at Finch Elementary, had his poem “Spring” published in the May issue of Highlights for Children. Griff is the son of Kevin and Pat Shelley.

Corrine Krauss of Spokane has been selected to attend the Summer NASA Academy at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Krauss, a junior at Montana State University, is a Presidential Scholar, National Merit Scholar and Space Grant Scholar.

Only 15 students nationwide are accepted to attend the flight center program.

James Culverwell, a seventh-grade teacher at Jenkins Middle School in Chewelah, Wash., was selected as Teacher of the Month for March by Eastern Washington University. He was nominated by student Becky Gregerson.

Kenneth Van Sickle, a history and social science teacher at University High School, was selected as Teacher of the Month for April by Eastern Washington University. He was nominated by student Kishia Agee.
