Ewu Faculty And Staff Recognized By School

Several members of Eastern Washington University’s faculty and staff were honored on the school’s Founder’s Day.

Honorees were:

Robert Gibbs, professor of physics, received the Trustee’s Medal for achievements in teaching and scholarship. It’s the highest honor the university can bestow upon a faculty member.

Erik Ellis, classified staff with EWU mail services and Paul Ohler, administrative senior systems programmer in information resources, both received Distinguished Service Awards for exemplary service.

Winning the PTI/Pacificcorp Foundation Faculty Achievement Award for outstanding teaching were: Jeanne Small, associate professor of chemistry/biology; Elizabeth Kissling, assistant professor of communication studies; Susan McGinty, English professor; Patricia Nemetz-Mills, associate professor of management; and William Williams, education professor.

Zo Woods, nurse manager of psychiatric services at Sacred Heart Medical Center, received Supporter of the Year Award from Spokane Visiting Nurse Association’s Home Health Care Services. Woods was cited for helping establish a home psychiatric program at VNA to serve homebound elderly who often have mental illness in addition to their physical health problems.

Cindy Carr, a student at Whitworth College, has been named an All-American Collegiate Scholar. Carr was nominated by Professor Charles McKinney for excelling in the academic disciplines.

She is the daughter of Bill and Helen Colville, Reardan.

Caren Cartwright, a senior at St. George’s School, has received a four-year tuition scholarship to Midway (Ky.) College, where she plans to major in business administration and equestrian management.

Eight Spokane-area dieticians received statewide awards from the Washington State Dietetics Association. Of the nine awards given, all but one were from Spokane.

The winners are:

Outstanding Dietitian: Susan Luckas, Deaconess Medical Center.

Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year: Nikki Kettles, Deaconess Medical Center.

Recognized Diet Technician of the Year: Wanto Schmitz, Geiger Correctional Center.

Community Practice Award for Excellence: Connie Schneider, Director of Senior Nutrition and WIC Programs, Spokane County Health District.

ADA Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award: Linda Massey, professor at Washington State University-Spokane.

Public Policy Maker of the Year: Linda Stone, project director, Washington Food Policy Action Center.

Outstanding Diet Technician Student: Paula Brown, Spokane Community College.

Outstanding Dietetic Intern: Gayle Alleman, WSU Spokane.

Ferris High School’s S.A.D.D./ Saftye Club won first place as the Most Outstanding Newcomers Club at the state conference. The group received $500 and a trophy.

Members placed second in the Banner/Poster contest with an award of $200. The Governor’s Recognition Award was also presented to Ferris for the Eastern Washington region.
