Nic Will Reopen Bidding On Student Union Remodeling

From Staff Reports

North Idaho College will reopen bidding on its student union remodeling project, setting it back at least 60 days.

The delay is caused by construction and equipment bids that came in $532,000 over budget.

The architect and contractor tried to eliminate building features and bring the price down to the $4.7 million available, said dean of administration Rollie Jurgens.

“We tried real hard,” he said Thursday. “We got close, but our attorney advised us to rebid the project.”

Student leaders and college officials traveled around the region to come up with a good design for remodeling the Edmiston Student Union. The effort to get the best possible building meant “we overshot a bit,” said Jurgens.

The building is closed now, and its services and offices have been squeezed in elsewhere on campus. The delay means the student union won’t reopen in the spring of 1998 as hoped.

“After the contract is awarded, construction will take a year, plus or minus,” said Jurgens.

The building will be paid for over 20 years, with an $86 per semester student fee.
