Nevada state boxing regulators will try once again next week to fine Oliver McCall $250,000 for refusing to fight during his heavyweight title bout with Lennox Lewis. The Nevada Athletic Commission will meet Wednesday to consider a proposed settlement with McCall over charges that he brought disrepute to the sport of boxing by quitting in the ring. … Pat Harris, a former Army basketball star under Mike Krzyzewski, was hired as the school’s men’s coach. He filled in as interim coach for the women’s squad last season. … John Henry Mills, a free-agent running back who also played linebacker in four seasons with the Houston Oilers, signed with the Oakland Raiders. … Wide receiver Michael Haynes, who left Atlanta for New Orleans as a free agent in 1994, is returning to the Falcons.

Pontiac driver Bobby Hamilton earned the pole position for Sunday’s Pocono 500 in Long Pond, Pa. Second-fastest in the session to set positions 1-25 for the $1.3 million event was the Ford of Dale Jarrett, who qualified in the top 10 for the 12th time in 13 races. … Kenny Irwin rode to victory in the NASCAR truck series’ Pronto Auto Parts 400 in Fort Worth, Texas. … Brazil’s former top refereeing authority has been banned from soccer for life after being accused of extortion and fixing games. In a decision late Thursday night, Brazil’s Superior Sports Tribunal applied its maximum penalty to Ivens Mendes, who headed the country’s Committee of Soccer Referees for eight years until his resignation last month. Also banned for life was Mario Celso Petraglia, president of Atletico Paranaense. Petraglia was linked to Mendes in a plan to fix games.
