Students Prove They Know “Math Is Cool”

Thirty-six teams from 15 regional schools recently participated in the seventh-grade “Math is Cool Championship,” sponsored by Washington Trust Bank and hosted by the Lewis and Clark Math Team under the guidance of Gregg Sampson.

Top-scoring students were:

Nick Fairfax, Browne Elementary; Ellie Nagy, Cataldo Catholic School; A.T. Johnson, Centennial Middle School; Tyler Strictler, Columbia School 206; Britt Glubrecht, Deer Park Junior High; Cedar Reimer, Evergreen School 205; Josh Schumacher, Glover Middle School; Meghan McGarry, Greenacres Middle School; Caitlin Connelly, Hutton Elementary; Andrew Kugler, Lincoln Heights Elementary; Greg Hogan, Medical Lake Middle School; Logan Wilson, Northwest Christian; Jonathan McClain, St. George’s Middle School; Mary Beth Kries, St. Patrick Catholic School; and Tom Meloche, Trinity Catholic School.

Top 15 overall individuals were:

Jonathan McClain, Erin Feltman and Chris Grubb, all of Saint George’s Middle School; Logan Wilson, Northwest Christian; and A.T. Johnson, Centennial Middle School. Ellie Nagy, Cataldo; Caitlain Connelly, Hutton; Josh Schumacher, Glover; Ashlee Martinez, St. George’s; Josh Vaswig, Glover; Erin Winsper, Centennial; Chris Johnson, St. George’s; Sarah Hulse, St. George’s; Michael Connelly, Hutton; and Bonnie Eldenburg, Hutton.

The top seven teams:

Heidi Decker, Cody Dompier, A.T. Johnson and Erin Winsper, Centennial.

Tom Feulner, Laura Gabby, Katie Gillum and Ellie Nagy, Cataldo.

Caitlin Connelly, Bonnie Eldenburg, Stefani Kaupilla and Lili Kellman, Hutton.

Matlida Beadling, Rhiannon Ervin, Sarah Hulse and Julie Witherspoon, St. George’s.

Keisha Carlson, Alexandria Hadford, Michael Huffman and Sarah Peterson, Northwest Christian.

Michael Connelly, Martin Escandon, Chris Halvorson and Bryce Henson, Hutton.

James Wade, a junior majoring in architecture at Washington State University, received a $400 academic achievement scholarship from WSU. He is a 1986 graduate of Asotin (Wash.) High School and the son of Keith and Alice Wade of Clarkston, Wash.

Three local high school graduating students will receive ROTC College Scholarships from the Air Force. The awards cover four years of tuition, text books and lab fees, plus a monthly stipend of $150.

The students and their high schools are Benjamin Brattebo, West Valley; Megan Brandon, East Valley; and Patrick Connellan, Gonzaga Prep.

Sarah Beaty, Chattaroy, Wash., and a graduating art student at Gonzaga University, received the university’s Senior Art Award for exceptional overall achievement in art.
