Marlins Survive Rockies, Weather

Associated Press

Jeff Conine and Alex Arias hit late-inning homers and the visiting Florida Marlins defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-5 Saturday in the rain- delayed first game of a scheduled day-night doubleheader.

The game was delayed in the middle of the third inning for 2 hours, 13 minutes by rain and a tornado warning. Because of the delay, the second game was postponed until today, when the teams will again try to play a doubleheader.

Colorado took an early 4-1 lead on consecutive home runs by Larry Walker, Andres Galarraga and Dante Bichette. It was the second time this season the Rockies hit three in a row against Florida.

Conine rallied the Marlins from a 5-4 deficit, hitting a two-run homer with one out in the seventh.

Braves 5, Giants 2 San Francisco

Atlanta’s Greg Maddux allowed two hits in eight innings and Andruw Jones hit a tiebreaking homer in the ninth.

Maddux (7-2) was perfect before Mark Gardner’s single with two outs in the sixth, and led 2-0 in the eighth. But Maddux allowed his first walk of the game to J.T. Snow and Glenallen Hill followed with his eighth homer, his second in two games.

Maddux, who has never pitched a no-hitter, retired the first 17 Giants batters. The Giants did not come close to a hit before Gardner’s single under the glove of first baseman Fred McGriff in the hole between first and second.

Padres 5, Astros 4 (10) San Diego

Pinch-hitter Scott Livingstone singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning.

Tony Gwynn, who earlier hit his 100th career home run and extended his hitting streak to 17 games, drew a one-out walk from Ramon Garcia (2-4) in the 10th.

Pirates 9, Phillies 2 Pittsburgh

Jon Lieber withstood a two-run first inning and allowed only two more hits in the next five-plus innings, and Pittsburgh won its third in a row.

The streak matches the division-leading Pirates’ longest of the season.

They have won seven of 10 and are 5-2 in June.

Expos 5, Cubs 0 Montreal

F.P. Santangelo homered from both sides of the plate and Carlos Perez pitched his second consecutive shutout.

Santangelo connected for a two-run homer as a righty in the fifth inning against Terry Mulholland. He hit a solo shot as a lefty in the eighth off Mel Rojas. Santangelo became the third Expos player to homer from both sides. Tim Raines did it in 1988 and Bret Barberie in 1991.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 2 Los Angeles

Hideo Nomo struck out 10 to end his first three-game losing streak in the majors and Mike Piazza homered.

Nomo (6-5) gave up six hits and walked three. He pitched his first complete game since no-hitting Colorado last Sept. 17.

John Mabry extended his hitting streak to 18 games and set up RBI grounders by Tom Lampkin and Royce Clayton.

Reds 10, Mets 5 Cincinnati

Terry Pendleton had three hits, including a pair of RBI doubles, as Cincinnati overcame another pitching injury for its third straight victory.

Reds starter Mike Morgan left with pulled rib cage muscles and went on the 15-day disabled list. On Friday, the Reds put starter John Smiley on the DL with a strained groin.

Clearing the bases

Atlanta’s Kenny Lofton extended his hitting streak to 12 games…. Florida’s Devon White left the game in the first inning with pain in his left calf…. The Pirates lead the majors with 40 hit batsmen….

Pittsburgh’s Kevin Young struck out in the eighth, but wound up at third on the play on Mike Lieberthal’s passed ball and two-base error.
