Parents Beware: What Goes Around, Comes Around Again

Here’s one thing you can depend upon: Sooner or later you get a chance to even things with your parents.

Consider the story that San Francisco Giants manager Dusty Baker tells.

It seems Baker recalls being spanked by his father one afternoon during a fishing trip. The young angler apparently wasn’t being careful enough, and so he knocked a stringer of fish back into the water.

As the fish swam away, Baker’s father commenced to whale on the boy.

Fast forward 30 years. Baker and his father again are fishing. Once again, the fish line is dislodged and the day’s catch escapes.

Only this time it’s Baker the elder who is the clumsy culprit.

The son’s reaction? As Baker explained it, he pulled off his belt and - grinning all the while - said, “Dad, remember what happened when I lost that stringer full of fish?”

Taking a leap: Despite being 72 years old, former President George Bush wasn’t afraid to fulfill his 50-year-old promise to once again parachute from a plane.

Bush’s much-publicized jump a couple of months ago earned him both headlines and widespread respect.

But he wasn’t able to avoid fear altogether. “The frightening part was telling Barbara,” Bush said.

Imagine that. Once leader of the free world and he’s still afraid of wifey.

He’s clearly a regular guy after all.

A working marriage: No marriage is immune from the stresses of everyday life. That’s one reason why Worldwide Marriage Encounter stays in business.

The non-profit organization, which is endorsed by the Catholic Church, offers support to couples of all faiths. The group’s idea, which involves teaching couples to “learn how to add more romance, excitement and depth to their relationships,” is passed on over a long weekend.

Couples interested in participating in the next encounter weekend, which will be held June 27 through 29 at Spokane’s Immaculate Heart Retreat, should call 484-5683 or 325-3263.

Two more weekends are scheduled for the fall: Oct. 3-5 and Nov. 13-16. Meals and accommodations are provided.
